Background:
ADULT entertainment companies seeking to operate internet red light districts would face resistance from the Rudd Labor government.
Why this article is a joke:
- The government said it would oppose their creation when they become available under the global internet regulator’s new scheme to allow registration of generic top-level-domains (gTLDs). -Nothing will of course be done for the millions of porn websites currently serving numerous individuals around the world.
- The domain names, which would be created to accommodate adult content, are expected to be in high demand when the world’s internet names regulator, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), starts accepting applications next February. Each could net ICANN tens of millions of dollars and several Australian companies are believed to be among those which have expressed strong interest in registering them.
AusRegistry, which operates Australia’s peak domain registry for .au, has revealed that it has been approached by several entities planning to apply to register adult-themed gTLDs including, .xxx and .sex.
- However, a spokeswoman for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said the government was opposed to the creation of adult-themed domain names.”The government does not support the creation of the .xxx TLD,” the spokeswoman said. She did not elaborate. -Yeah because making it easier to mass block porn (by excluding all .xxx or .sex domains) is a bad thing for all the conservatives out there.
- A previous attempt to create an internet red light district by a US registry operator, which sought to have .xxx ratified by ICANN, failed in 2006.At the time, the plan faced criticism from churches and the adult entertainment industry who found themselves in a rare alliance on the issue. -Imagine the awkward party to celebrate the failed ratification.
- Christian lobbies objected on grounds that the TLD would make pornography easier for children to access. -Well first of all children that are under 12 should not even be on the Internet unsupervised. Those that are 13-17 are mostly not retarded and figure out Google.com in no time making it easier to access porn with the new proposal above becoming moot.
- Adult entertainment groups were concerned that their constituents would be forced into a ghettoised sector of the internet that would be easy for governments to block. -Meh, if it becomes blocked just go back to .com or .info etc. Google doesn’t care whether the word after the “dot” is com, sex, org or punani.
- They were also concerned that adult content web service providers would lose value built into their existing .com- and .net-based addresses. -You won’t. As long as there are males out there money issues should not be a problem.
- ICANN’s board voted against the plan as the registry couldn’t demonstrate it represented the sex industry with sufficient unanimity. However, the procedures for approving new gTLDs currently being contemplated by ICANN will give responsibility for approving controversial domains to an independent arbiter.
- Groups and individuals that object to the creation of a domain name on morality and public order grounds will be able to apply to a judiciary convened by the International Chamber of Commerce. Its decisions will be based on existing trade and human rights covenants. -Yeah, again I don’t understand where all these moralists and so on were when porn was being put on the Internet in the first place. Oh what is that? They were there all that time. Gee a lot got done hey?
Balance:
- Porn is porn. Doesn’t matter where from the Internet it is located. No one is going to complain.
- All of this talk about switching domains over to people complaining is nothing but a bunch of blah blah (i.e. redundant nonsense).
- While I am sure many would not agree to pornography there are probably just as many that do. Respect everyone’s right to viewing (or performing in) it.
- Kids (anyone under 18) should not be rightfully exposed to it but if it does come up I am sure a parent would be mature enough to handle the situation. I say this on the background of legality. Though I am not stupid enough to believe that no child under 18 does not look at naughty pictures.
- No matter what obscure name the website will be called, there will always be trustworthy Google (and even Yahoo and Bing) to help the customer find their way.
- Probably irrelevant but I should point out that I have nothing against the Rudd Governments on many of its views.
-VeryCritical.

It is not up to me to keep them away. It is up to the parents. But I am sure many parents do a fine job in keeping their children away from those sites.
it is true and it is a good topic , keep away children from these xxx sites.
